Full Moon and Star by fdpiech Full Moon and Star by fdpiech
Was out shooting the full moon a few nights back... this one came out well... you can even see a start down in the lower left corner.

Sigma 70-300mm @ 300mm
Quantaray x2 Teleconverter

1/500 sec @ f8

** EDIT **

At ~astr0wiz's request...

The moon can be a pain in the ass to shoot. This exposure was shot using the "Sunny 16" Rule.

Sunny 16 - in it's most basic def is - on a bright sunny day, the proper outdoor exposure for a front lit object is 1/ISO @ f16

Remember... It's ALWAYS sunny on the moon...

Very pretty shot, I love the detailing in the moon, and that small star is a very nice detail in the photo. My boyfriend and I are a couple of budding astronmers ourselves, and we are saving up for a telescope. I find the moon is well placed in the photo. Very pleasing to the eyes.

I'm envious, I've never once taken a shot of the moon that came out as clear.

The moon is a pain in the butt to shoot for a lot of people. Many think that because it's night time, that you need a long exposure to shoot... that's not the case with the moon... it's much brighter than people think. You shoot the moon as if it were a bright sunny day... 1/ISO at f16 The sun is always shining on the moon... ;)

Ahh, that makes a lot of sense. My pics have always been extremely washed out and overbright, because I made the same assumptions about shutter speed..got it. I'll have to try again.

I had the same problem a bunch of times until someone pointed out that it's always sunny on the moon... I'd never thought about it before.

ooooh...you have a coooool lens...I almost bought one of those sigma lenses...but...maybe in a few months....I want it so much, I've always wanted to take rad shots of the moon (among other things). This is great.

This sigma isn't anything to write home to mother about. It was part of their 2 lens kit... it's "OK"... now the 15mm EX ... THAT is a great lens. I'm saving my pennies now to get a 70-200 f4 L ... that will be much nicer... ;)

Not to steal a line from Bill & Ted, but ... This totally rocks, dude! This must be a stunning camera you own - looks like something out of that movie Apollo 13. I also like the fact that you left the moon off center

I use a Canon 10D. I took this one hand held... the next I'll put on a tripod when I get the right night.

I'm waiting for the new moon so I can get a star field with no moon in the 15mm lens... that should be cool.

If there is one thing I hate, it's images that are set right on center. Not that I haven't taken my share, it's just that it feels un-creative to me.

I'm glad you like it.

Amazing shot Frank. Hey, I just got the Sigma 70-300 DL super macro.
Is this the same lens you are using?
Any probs with it on the Rebel?

I'm not sure if it's the "super macro" or not. It came as part of a Sigma 2 lens set. As for the Rebel... no... it seems to work just fine on my rebel.
